Monitors won't wake up after sleep

I've just migrated a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2013) into a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019).

I had two monitors connected from VGA to DP into the late 2013 with no problem. They would wake up after I wake up my MacBook Pro from sleep.

Now I've connected these two from VGA to USB-C and they don't wake up from sleep. I have to unplug and plug them again.

What's wrong with it?

Hi rafaelruizmunoz,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re having trouble with external monitors. I’m happy to help. To start, I suggest resetting the SMC:

USB-C is the name of the connector, ONLY.

It is very possible these adapters are inadequate for the job on a Mac with Thunderbolt-3 (as opposed to the simpler USB-3 ports offered on the early USB-C Macbooks.

The Apple adapter costs US$69, but if its does not do the job for you, you can return it. It is worth a try.

Hello Allen A.

It didn't work.

When I put the MacBook to sleep, and wake it up, it won't remember the Display settings.

My display settings are:

MacBook screen scaled to 1440 x 900.

Screen1 rotated 90º

Screen2 as it is.

Arranged in a custom layout.

In the cases I've tested:

1) It works

2) It keeps the MacBook screen scaled but doesn't wake up Screen1 and Screen2

3) It wakes up Screen1 correctly, it doesn't wake up Screen2 and MacBook gets the default scale (1680x1050)

4) Possibly another combination of misconfiguration

What else could I do?

These really:

They work if I don't put my system to sleep (or if it sleeps for a short time, it works most of the times).

I've bought from the same shop for my previous MacBook Pro, VGA to Thunderbolt and never had a problem.

I've tried with different monitors and didn't work either.

And I've tried these adapters into a MacBook Pro 13'' and it works.

rafaelruizmunoz,

Thanks for the additional information. I suggest making sure that your MacBook is updated:

I also suggest restarting in safe mode and trying in a different user account to see if the settings remain the way you’ve changed them:

Cheers.

I've tried it all, and nothing worked. I've tried another user, guest user, safe boot.

These are some images detailed chronologically:

1) I sleep and wake up from sleep:

I have to unplug and plug the monitor that didn't wake up.

2) When both are switched on, the entire displays lose configuration:

3) I have to configure it manually again:

4) I put it to sleep and I wake it up from sleep:

One monitor is rotated back and the other is fine (sometimes it's the opposite)

5) I restart it

No monitor wakes up at login prompt or after logged in.

Sometimes only one of them wakes up (and the other is wrong)

And some others, it wakes up both, most of the times one or both are wrong
