I am moving to Japan this summer for work, and I was wondering if there is a way to use different Apple IDs on my iPhone XR. One the one hand, I don't want to lose access to my purchases I've made here in the US when I go abroad, but I also want to be able to download apps to the phone with my Japanese Apple ID that I wouldn't be able to have access to otherwise (local restaurants, transit, etc.) while I live there. Any ideas? Thanks!

If you create a new ID for Japan or use your current ID, but make a region change, you won't lose access to downloaded apps, but with a different ID, you won't be able to update the apps if they are available in the Japanese store. If you use the same ID, but make a region change, you will be able to update previously purchased apps if they are available in the Japanese store.
To use the same ID, you need a zero account balance, you need to cancel all your subscriptions, you need a credit card issued by a bank in the country the store is in, and you need a billing address in that country. If you have an account balance, either buy something more expensive and pay the balance with a credit card or contact iTunes Support and ask them to zero balance your account.
