Yellow discoloring of Macbook display

Suddenly, my MB display took on a very noticeable yellow tint on a large part of the screen - only about a fourth, somewhat irregular shape, in the middle is still pure white. See picture (inset shows, with blue stripes, the part that's turned yellow).

What has happened? It came suddenly, I don't know that it's been subject to heat or abuse of any kind.
