It continues to record in portrait. You need to *start* the recording with the phone rotated to the landscape orientation, before recording, so it records in landscape. It was easy to do using the earlier iPhones, you could simply swipe up from the bottom in landscape mode and hit the screen record button. You cannot swipe up from the bottom on the iPhone X, only from the top right.

I have my screen record button in my Control Panel and With the phone in the landscape position on the home screen I swipe down from the top of the phone (which is actually from the top left to the right to bring up the control panel and press record. From there I swiped down from the top right in landscape mode which is actually bottom right in portrait mode to bring the Control Panel back up to stop the recording. The issue is you have to have an app that works in landscape mode open when you start the recording since the X is a small form factor phone it will not start the recording from the home screen in landscape mode.
When you turn the screen recording on, what happens when you turn the phone to landscape? I just used screen record in landscape mode on my X
