ibook Clamshell i7/i9 core project

Hi!

I am planning on upgrading an ibook clamshell in order to use it properly in 2019.

I know this is a larger project, but this is the first time I am doing something like this, so I was hoping for some support from others who have a bit more knowledge in the field.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I already own a tangerine iBook G3 Clamshell, it doesn’t have a battery so I always have to plug it in. I know you put in a more modern battery to power the newer internals. I know newer batteries have a different shape compared to the original Clamshell one, so where do you put it?

Also I know that you need to modify the charging cable as well in order to charger the newer battery, does anyone know how to do that that?

Regarding a new Motherboard, ram cards, hard drive, etc. do you purchase all of these components separately? If so is there anything I need to look-out for regarding compatibility or are there any you recommend? Another thought I had, would be to purchase a defective Macbook Pro (2015 or newer) online and “steal” those components to put into the Clamshell. Do you think that would work? I would feel more comfortable knowing all the components are compatible.

I heard people talk about “gutting” a macbook air for this project. I am assuming a macbook air is handy due to it’s slimness and size, but I would prefer to make the clamshell as strong as possible so would a macbook pro 13 inch work too?

Thanks for the help!

There is little to indicate the success (if possible within reason) could be forthcoming

from such a venture; however a few ideas or false-starts? had been noted in i386 base

discussions not part of the official Apple communities online.

Some venture as far as to suggest using PC parts inside shell of a former colors G3 iBook.

Then adapt other parts as required to sustain only the shape; even the display would need

re-consideration because the old hardware cannot be driven by newer Apple technologies.

Of course the 'non-Apple hardware' would not officially/then be able to run valid macOS.

There is a matter of license, once hardware goes outside the official realm of intention.

So if one did go and try to make an i5/i7/i9 project with core based on first series iBook G3

(case only) that may be OK to reverse engineer functional hardware from later Apple mac.

But perhaps this ASC discussions area would not work to get much traction toward that goal.

In this matter, good luck & happy computing! 🌞
