downloads folder is suddenly empty...why? and how do I get everything back?

Hello My downloads folder was full of stuff two days ago and now it is empty except for an empty music folder. I am wondering where all this stuff has gone, some of it is important legal information which would be a pain to replace. The trash bin has nothing in it. Any help would be much appreciated. I am not a Mac guru so simple language please. Thanks.

deleted downloads folder from home folder Somehow I seem to have completely deleted the downloads folder from my home folder. I have tried to add a folder and rename it to "downloads" but it stays as unnamed folder and if I try to change it again, it gives me the "Operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)." I can download to my desktop, but this isn't ideal. Any thoughts? I'm on an old 2011 macbook pro High Sierra 10.13.6
