Stay in space when opening new window

Hello, I would like to be able to open a new window for whatever I am trying to open and stay in the same space. Example.

Space 1 has a mail window and Numbers file open.

Space 2 has a browser window open and I want to open/create a new Number file. If I toggle to Number to hit Command>N, it will switch to space 1. I want to be able to open a new file in the Space 2 without having to go to Space 1, create a new file, and drag it to Space 2.

Is this possible?
