iPhone text messaging not syncing with outlook app contacts.

Hello,

Not sure if this is an iPhone, or Microsoft issue, so apologies if I've got the wrong forum.

I have user with an iPhone X (OS is: 12.3.1).

Currently the user does not have any email accounts configured via the onboard mail app.

The user does have iCloud, with iCloud contacts enabled.

For his work email (exchange), he has the MS Outlook app installed.

The issue is that when he receives a text message from a work contact, the number is not attaching to a name, so he doesn't recognize the sender.

Another issue is that, when he goes to compose a new text message, when he does a search, it is only searching the iCloud contacts, and not the MS outlook app contacts.

Other users who have the MS outlook app don't have this problem.

Apparently everything was working correctly, but the phone had issues (undisclosed), and so the User took the phone to an Apple store, who updated the phone. Not sure if there is a backup from when text messaging worked that I can restore it back to.

I've tried resetting the network settings, powering the phone off/on via the power button, and did a reset via the volume up, volume down and power buttons.

I've also tried editing a contact by inserting a character in the name (directly via the outlook app contacts), closing out of the outlook app, doing the volume button reset, then editing the contact back to it's original state (to possibly restore the DB).

I've also tried turning off the Dialing Assistant (info I found off a web site).

Kind of at a loss at this point. Might anyone be familiar with this and have a suggestion?

Thanks!

Jim

Is it possible that the contacts can be synced? Them being sandboxed makes sense, but I found this

on a MS site:

Check that access to Contacts is allowed for Outlook:

Steps may vary between devices and between operating systems. If you don't own an iOS or Samsung Android device, use these directions as a guideline:

  • For iOS: Open the Settings app > scroll down and tap Outlook > Contacts and Background App Refresh should be on.
  • For Android: Open phone Settings > Applications > Outlook > Make sure Contacts is enabled.
  • Then open the Outlook app and go to Settings > tap on your account > tap Sync Contacts.

That's not an "issue". It's by design. The data is sandboxed. If they want their Exchange contacts to be available for things like messages and caller ID, they they will have to set up the Exchange account in Settings>Passwords & Accounts and sync the contacts down to the phone that way. Note that they don't 'have to' sync email to the native mail app if they don't want to.
