No notifications in full screen?

When I’m in full screen mode on my Mac watching a video or playing a game I do not get message notifications. I have an Apple Watch, Phone, and iPad all sitting next to me. They seem to recognize that I’m on the Mac and defer to it for notification duty, but when video is playing in full screen the Mac does not send a notification. I’m not getting notified by any of my devices. Any solutions?
