Apple Superdrive not recognized by my iMac. Do I need additional software?

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.14

A Super Drive works with Macs. If you have a commercial CD or non-Blu-ray disk you can insert it should play fine. If you are trying to burn a disk, if you inset a blank disk you want to burn to, See: Burn CDs and DVDs on Mac - Apple Support

It would be helpful to know which iMac you have. If your iMac shipped with an internal Superdrive, pre late 2012, the Apple Superdrive isn't intended to work with your iMac, it works with models without a built in drive.

No extra software is needed. Don't be offended but some users have oriented the drive upside down, the silver side goes up.

Some users also expect an icon to show up on their desktop when they plug the drive in, that won't happen until you insert a disc.
