How can I retrieve old text messages

I’ve updated to iOS 12.3.1 and now all my old text messages are gone. I am sure I haven’t deleted them and I’ve always set the keeping of old text to ‘forever’. I don’t backup to ICloud.

As important information has been is there any way I can get old texts back?

Are you using Messages in iCloud? That is not the same as backing them up.

Did you ever back up to iTunes?

If you have no backup and were not syncing them, they are gone.
