Message I delete stays in my inbox marked as junk

This all the sudden started happening. I select a message from the inbox mail viewer window and hit the little trashcan as always and instead of whisking it to trash, the message stays right where it is in the viewer with a little "junk icon" located under the flag column. But the message is empty. If I select it and open it, it is like a ghost or something.
