All links to an email address (either on a website or embedded as a mail link in an email) launches Google Gmail to create the email. I thought that was a google issue but now it happens in messages in my Apple Mail. How do I fix this so email links open new messages in my Apple Mail?

That did it. How do things like this get changed? I know I had a recent Mojave update installed (automatically) but other than that, nothing I did differently. Thanks for the help.

Make sure your default email reader is set to your preferred email client. For Apple's stock mail app, go to Mail - Preferences - General - Default email reader.
No problem! GMAIL can sometimes change this option though I am not sure how...
