MacBook Air loses internet connection

I lose internet connection frequently, even when my WiFi indicator says I'm still connected to the router. I have to restart my computer to re-establish my connection.

On my WiFi drop-down menu, the RSSI is -73 dBm, the Noise is -96 dBm, the Tx Rate is 48 Mbps, and the PHY is 802.11g. I am connecting to a CenturyLink C2000a 802.11n Router. My MacBook Air is a 2017 model. I'm using Mojave 10.14.4

I have read through and performed the diagnostics, which (as far as I can understand), try to lay the issue at the router. Problem is, all other wireless devices are able to connect to the internet via the router at home and at my office. It's just my MacBook Air that has the issue. Both Windows and Apple devices are able to stay connected, but my MBA gets randomly kicked off.

Hello SCW1189,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with your internet connection on your MacBook Air. I am happy to check this out with you.

When you experience the issue again, I recommend using Wireless Diagnostics to detect and offer solutions to the issue. This article will help: Check for Wi-Fi issues using your Mac - Apple Support

There are other troubleshooting steps provided in this help article as well: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity - Apple Support

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

I'm not discouraging you from doing any and troubleshooting the people recommend here, but from my personal experience and the fact that I'm impatient, if some basic troubleshooting doesn't fix things (such as making a new Network Location profile: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202480 which solves 90% of software-only Wi-Fi issues) I just jump to the chase and get a $10-$30 Nano-sized USB wi-fi adapter and never look back.

Edimax is my favorite brand to use for this purpose on the Mac since all their stuff has Mac drivers. It's $12 on Amazon:

You can certainly get something fancier, but I've had fantastic luck with these.

One last thought...

Contact Apple and request to speak to the Apple MacBook Staff about Apple connection issues..

Request an iPhone Camera Share: Upon talking with the rep, consider asking them to share the camera of your iPhone, if an applicable option.

The Apple Rep will see this first hand from their end. If you can’t stay connected to the Internet, you can’t share the screen of your Mac with them. The

Once confirmed,, they will inform you of where you can go from there.

You may need to see if you can re-set the wireless base station.

My old original AirPort Express finally 'failed to re-set' after 10 yrs.

(Depending on the age of your base wireless, could be weak;

may be something to consider replacement, to troubleshoot.)

I had to use my iPhone as cellular modem to go online; while my

other Macs could still use the cable modem with Ethernet. Most

were not close enough to wired internet, to use that to go online.

At least I have a few spare wireless AirPort base stations here, so

the only issue was in erasing previous setup info, to renew one.

The links provided could be helpful to return your base to service.

Or just deny power to the wi-fi base for 10 minutes; & plugin again.

Good luck & happy trails!🌞

Single this Out with a New Administrator User

Have you Configured a New Administrator User to see if this still occurs? If it doesn’t occur on the new user, perhaps it has to do with the current user you are logged into.

You would configure this user as an Administrator User. Go Here: System Preferences > Users & Groups > Click the Plus Sign

Did that Work?
