I'm not sure how far back but it does seem to me that there was a time when it wasn't preinstalled.
That's what I remember too. I've never used it but ready to start. Have been using MS Office but it's gotten too expensive.
Another option to consider is LibreOffice. It is free but very good. It is more similar to and more compatible with Microsoft Office than Numbers and Pages. https://www.libreoffice.org/
