News+ Family Sharing does not seem to work

I have family sharing for Purchases and Apple Music turned on with no difficulty sharing those options.

I have a subscription for Apple News+ that currently shows as off and I would like to turn it on. When I try to turn it on it just pops up a screen with a 'Learn More' button. If I click that button it pops up a screen with a 'Start Reading' button. If I click that it takes me to Apple News+.

I never get to a screen that allows me to turn on Apple News+ family sharing so I am stumped on how to achieve this.

I have seen in other posts that say you can't enable family sharing while you are in the trial period. I am no longer in the trial period and I have a paid subscription.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

thanks

Hi pgray,

Thanks for the post in Apple Support Communities. I see you have a question about Family Sharing and a News+ subscription.

This resource, titled Join Apple News+ in the News app, should provide an answer to your question:

  • "If you're a member of a Family Sharing family group, everyone in your family group automatically has access to Apple News+ after you subscribe."

Based on this, you shouldn't need to turn on any type of sharing for News+ as it should automatically be accessible to all members of your Family Sharing. Can you provide more detail about what you're seeing regarding turning on News+? What happens when a member of your family tries accessing News+? Are you able to access it from your own device?

Cheers!

Hi Brenden,

Good suggestion, but I could not turn on the family sharing for News+ even before I installed the beta.

However, it turns out the sharing button being 'Off' does not matter. I have been trying to turn it on (unsuccessfully) before asking my family to check out News+.

Even though I can't seem to turn 'On' sharing for News+ , I thought what the heck and grabbed one of my family's iPads and fired up News, and then clicked on News+ and it worked !

Thank you and everyone else for your suggestions. I guess the 'On' or 'Off' indicator for sharing News+ is meaningless. My family can use News+ even though my current setting indicates ( in my mind at least ) that they should not be able to.

Hi ,

Thank you for your reply.

Attached is a screenshot of what I am seeing. It shows that for Apple News+ the sharing is off. There does not appear to be any way to turn it on . If I try, it just takes me to the screen that says 'Learn More' and then if I click that I see an option to 'Start Reading' (as mentioned in my first post). At no point does it allow me to turn sharing from 'Off' to 'On'.

Hi,

I have tried turning on News+ sharing from an iPhone X running iOS 12.3.2 , and an iPad Pro 12 inch running iOS 12.3.2 .

I even installed the iOS 13 beta 2 on my iPhone X to see if that might solve the problem. It did not.

The result is the same. I can use News+ from any of my devices just fine. However I can not turn on family sharing for News+ from any of them.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

cheers

Hi there pgray,

We appreciate the reply. Which iOS version are you running on this device under Settings > General > About?

Also, for clarification, are you able to use the Apple News+ service within the News app on your device? Are other members of your Family Sharing group able to as well? Knowing this would help determine what might be happening.

Take care.
