Apple Business Manager error

Hi all,

I'm trying to enroll a (earlier used) iPad into Apple Business Manager to get familiar with all the "nitty gritty" details. Entering the serial number and assigning our Intune server generates below error. I've triple checked the serial number but get the same error each time I try to enroll the device. Being new to Apple Business Manager (and DEP) error messages stating something failed are not very helpfull.

The only cause/solution I can think of is that only brand new Apple devices which have never been turned on can be enrolled manually by using their serial number. So should earlier used Apple devices be enrolled by using Apple Configurator 2? (which would require a Mac 🙄)

Thanks, Chris

“only brand new Apple devices which have never been turned on can be enrolled manually by using their serial number.” no, I don’t think this is true.

DEP devices purchased from an authorized reseller, a carrier or Apple itself can be added to Apple Business Manager by following the entire ACN, DUNS number process where in Apple verifies your authority to enroll company’s devices into Apple Business Manager.

Check if your iPad is a DEP device, if it was purchased from an authorized reseller, a carrier or Apple itself, contact them to get the Apple Customer Number and the reseller ID, that will help you to add the device to Apple Business Manager.

If your device is not a DEP, you will have to first supervise it using Apple Configurator 2, a Mac and a lightning USB cable. It’s not a tedious process if you are just doing it for one device.

Remember, both of these procedures are only available for devices purchased after 1st of March, 2011.
