Monitor Problem

Since no one has replied to my first query, I'll try rephrasing. My monitor has what seems to be a hardware problem where two layers of whatever it is they use to make the monitor screen appear to be separating. It's almost like there are thin, flat bubbles of air spread all over the screen, making it hard to see from some angles. It doesn't look like a graphics problem. Does anyone know what is happening and what to do about it, if anything?

Thank you so much, BDAqua. This was very helpful if not hopeful (did have a dropping accident with it earlier in its life, so I doubt they'll do anything for me. It will help a student of mine, though, whose macbook is starting to do the same thing). Now I know what to do and what to expect. Much appreciation!
