How do I get my animoji icon back in messenger?

I asked this question about an hour ago and figured it out since.
In messenger, open an existing or new message. Next to the text field is a grayed-out "Apps" icon. Tap that icon to open up any apps that work with messenger. The monkey face "Animoji" icon should reappear.
