Zotero plug-in for Pages

iWork is currently the best collaborative office suite - and Zotero is an excellent reference management package, and outshines Endnote with its easy-to-use cloud-based folders. iWork and Zotero would, therefore, be the perfect match for all scholars working on documents collaboratively across departments and institutions. But sadly, there is still no Zotero plug-in for Pages.

Apple has offered an Endnote plug-in for a few years. But Endnote - although it still dominates in the medical field - has lacked development for many years. Sharing databases across institutions (and licenses) is an absolute pain with it. It is about time Apple supported a more state-of-the-art reference management software.

'Pages doesn't have a plugin framework, so there's no way for us to do this. You'd have to request plugin support from Apple. If it were possible to create a plugin for Pages, we would', one of the core Zotero developers, D Stillman, wrote to me in an email this morning.

Citation managers make plug-ins for Word Processors, not the other way round. So you should be asking Zotero for this, not Apple. Or failing that, Citation Managers like Bookends do work with Pages. Or failing that, get a more flexible Word Processor (I do enjoy the idea that iWork is currently the best of anything, it's an original thought at least). You'll find that Word or even Mac specific apps like Nisus Writer and Mellel integrate very well. I even drafted a PhD in Scrivener with Bookends.

So you don't want Apple to write a plug-in, but a framework that Zotero could use. Important to ask for the correct thing. Use the feedback link as Tom suggested.

Still, if you're serious about academic work, Pages has a long way to go.
