Can't send SMS on apple laptop

I am trying to send a text/SMS to a non-apple phone and it's doesn't go thru. I've turned my phone, laptop off and on, internet & wifi is strong and connected. Suggestions? Tks.

SMS TEXTING FROM MAC All of a sudden I cannot send iMessage to a non apple phone. My phone is set up to send and receive from 5 address and my Mac is set the same. Text message forwarding is set up properly. both phone and Mac re on the latest software and I'm using the same Apple ID on each.

Is your phone an iPhone?
