no sound during calls on iPhone 7

Does anyone know why my iPhone 7 is not producing any sound when I try to make calls? The screen shows that the call is connected but the speaker feature is greyed out and I am not able to hear anything during the call, nor is the other person able to hear me.

iPhone 7, iOS 12

While you're on a call, adjust the volume with the volume buttons. Make sure that you can see the volume indicator on the screen when you press the volume buttons.

You can also try force- restarting your phone:

  1. Press and hold both the volume down button and the Sleep/Wake button.
  2. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
