FaceTime recipients report echo on their voices

On my macbook retina 12-inch 2017, I am unable to use FaceTime because all of my recipients complain of an awful echo when they speak.

I'm using just the stock microphone and speakers. I've tried lowering the input volume on the microphone and have tried shifting the speaker output away from the microphone, but neither have worked to any degree.

MacBook, macOS 10.14

Facetime voice sounds like a robot After I have updated my iMac to macOS Monterey my voice a well as the voice of the other party sounds like a robot. The voice is also scrambled, not clear to understand, and breaking up. Using a Bluetooth headset like AirPods does not make any problems, the voice is crystal clear. Any idea how to fix it is highly welcome.

Resetting NVRAM could solve the issue.
