Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth distribution on new iMac

Hey every one,

i got my new iMac 27 2019.

i have lots of external devices so I had to use 3 thunderbolt docks.

Two were connected to the two ports on the iMac and one was chained to the first dock.

since the beginning I noticed all kinds of problems.

after consulting with the company that sold me my Mac they said this mother board can handle up to 60gbs and I tried to use 80.

Also they said that if only one thunderbolt port is being used it gets full 40gbs then if on that same line I connect few devices that takes for example 25gbs - I’m all good BUT

The second I connect something else to the second thunderbolt port the iMac will divide the bandwidth to 20gbs for each port. So now I will have issues since one of the posters try to “suck” 20gbs when it gets only 20.

so my questions are, if that is true?

if so why no body talks about that the facts you get 40gbs for all your ports and not just for each one?

He told me that the Mac Pro/iMac pro has stronger board and they deliver 40gbs for each port.

is that true?

and lastly, what’s the case with the new MacBook Pro that has 4 port? They all share 40gbs?

thanks

The truth is complicated, poorly documented, and changes from computer to computer depending on exactly how the manufacturer wired things.

On Apple desktops (and 15" MBP) each pair of ports is driven by a shared thunderbolt controller and provided PCIe 3.0x4 (32Gbps) for data plus up to (2? 4?) streams of Display Port 1.2 for video. While thunderbolt is capable of providing up to 40Gbps of combined video+data, the data component seems to be throttled to 22Gbps maximum to guarantee a 10Gbps minimum reserve for the 2nd port.

So yes, the 15" Macbook Pro and iMac Pro are indeed stronger with two independent port pairs (but still can't push full 40Gbps on every port simultaneously)

On the older 2016-2017 dual-core 13" Macbook Pro touchbar both controllers reportedly had independent displayport channels but shared the same PCIe 3.0x4 data link by way of the internal PCH-U (Platform Controller Hub), making them potentially worse than an iMac for pure data transfer despite having twice the TB-3 ports. The new quad-core 13"s have more PCIe lanes and might be wired differently.
