iPhone won't charge beyond 1%

Why is it that my IPhone wont charge beyond 1% and will instantly shutdown and once I turn it on again it displays 100% charged and shutdown again

Maybe the battery needs to be replaced...? Make an appointment at the genius bar of your local Apple Store and have it checked.
