imovie crashes when importing - tons of asks but not solved

I know this has been asked a hundred times because I've read through many of the posts about it. But I don't see that it has been solved. Whenever I try to import a quicktime file into iMovie, it immediately crashes. Running Mohave 10.14.3. iMovie version 10.0.9. I'm afraid to update anything because things tend to go wrong with every update. I attached a crash log in case anybody cares...

iMovie 10 does not like Quicktime's brand of the .mov format. Apparently there is a video or audio codec in the Quicktime .mov bucket that iMovie does not support. Your iMovie app is telling you that by crashing.

To import a Quicktime.mov into iMovie you must convert it to Mp4/AAC or some other codec that iMovie supports. You can use the free download Handbrake to do this.

Try updating your OS and iMovie versions to as current vesions as you can. Putting it off is not going to help.

If the problem persists, try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can import clips into iMovie without crashing.

If still no luck, open iMovie in a new library. To do that open iMovie while holding down the Option key and selecting to create a new library in the box that appears. Then create a project and try to import a clip.

If still crashing, shut down your computer and boot up in Safe Mode (see Finder menu instructions). After everything loads immediately shut down. Then reboot in normal mode. Now see if the crashing is cured.
