Can i add mpg, mp4 and avi files to my itunes library

I bought a new computer after my hard drive containing my itunes library died. I had a backup and restored the media files to their original locations (most being in Music\iTunes\iTunes Media). When I installed iTunes on the new computer, it recognized those files. I have some older video files in .mpg, .mp4 and .avi formats in another folder (Videos) that I am unable add to iTunes, though I know I had some of them in iTunes before. Is there something I need to do to make this work, or a workaround I need to use?

Windows, Windows 10

iTunes will normally accept files with .mpg/.mpeg and .mp4 file extensions, but not .avi. Whether they are added to the library depends on whether or not iTunes sees them as valid file that it can play. Place a copy of a file in the Automatically Add to iTunes folder inside the media folder. If iTunes accepts the file it will be added to the library, otherwise it gets moved into a Not Added folder. Doesn't tell you what the issue is, but at least you know for certain there is one. Use VLC to view anything iTunes cannot handle.
