I just bought a refurbished iPad and it asks for an access code I have not yet set

I just bought (received yesterday) a refurbished iPad. I have not been an Apple client before. I set up my account etc, and as I tried to become familiar with the iPad, the screen suddenly asks me for an access code that I have not set yet. I can't access anything. I am not a computer person and many of the instructions at Apple bypass my understanding.

If there is any way I can still use and finish setting up the iPad, is is possible to disable that access code function? It already asks me for my password every few seconds when I stop using it, that would security enough for me.

Thank you.

iPad mini 4, iOS 12

There is a lot you have not told us. It's hard to know what "access code" means exactly.

Here are a few unanswered question:

  • Might you have purchased this device from an unauthorized source?
  • Was the device thoroughly cleansed before turning it over to you? In other words, if you received this device from an authorized source, it would display a "Hello" screen when you first turned it on - just as it would if it were brand new.
  • Might you own any other Apple products? If so, perhaps you're seeing a verification code: Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication - Apple Support
