The last backup could not be completed

I have an iPhone X that for 6 months now has eventually gotten stuck where it can’t backup anymore, with the message “The last backup could not be completed”

When this happens, Photos sync stops working too, but most of the rest of the phone is fine, including Messages.

We can temporarily fix it for a day or two by signing out of iCloud and signing back in again, but it always fails again eventually. That is to say we can get one or more successful backups, which we can then use to restore, but subsequently with no changes to the phone, backups will fail.

We’ve tried to disable most things related to backup, and there are barely any apps on the phone, we’ve deleted most of them.

We’ve tried deleting the backup, backing up and restoring to iTunes instead (where we discovered the backup on the Mac was unusable because it was encrypted with some password none of us knew, even though the setting was disabled in iTunes). We have factory reset and even full restored from iTunes.

We’ve called Apple Support multiple times, patiently letting them walk us through all the same network setting rigamarole, to no effect. Someone said they’d escalate, but we’ve heard nothing from them since.

At this point, we’re about ready to give up. Does anyone have any ideas to try, or is this phone a write off? And does anyone know if we’ll have to write off the account too? Could it be broken in some way? We have an iPad hooked up to the same account and it seems to be ok for now. This is the first time in a decade I’ve been this disappointed in an Apple product, and not going to lie, it really stings.

My wife and I had iPhone 5s models prior to purchasing the XR back in December. Every once in a great while we would get the “last backup could not be completed” or “some files were not available for the last backup” messages on the 5s models but we get those messages on the XR phones once a week or so. We both have iPads backing up to iCloud with virtually no problems at all.

This is not not the ideal solution, but what has worked for me every time, is to close the settings app, restart the phone and then perform a manual backup. After that, the backups work fine for a few days or a week or so and I go through the steps again if the backup fails.

i have always found all things iCloud to be a little flakey. I cannot get iCloud Notes to sync with any consistency to save my soul. I refuse to use iCloud Photos so I don’t know if we would have success with that. Fortunately I can get the backups to work simply by closing settings and restarting the phones, and most everything else works fine with iCloud, but there are a couple of iCloud issues that have always been problematic for me.

We’ve done all that, and already visited the Genius Bar in person. They said they could not help, and we needed to phone support, which as I recounted earlier we have done several times.

I’m pretty confident we haven’t overlooked any formal Apple support processes. We’ve even attempted the guided upload of logs with Apple Support twice, but it looks like the problem actually precludes that upload succeeding, as both times the process just hung for days without completing.

At this point, Apple Support seem to be as lost as we are, which is frankly rather shocking.

Update: we’re now 6 months in without a solution. If you find this thread because you have the same or similar problem, be aware your device might be a write-off, there does not appear to be a solution, either the device or the account is permanently broken.

To cope until you work out and can afford what to do next (either create a new Apple account, try a new device, or opt out of Apple altogether), you can look into using a different messaging solution like whatsapp, so that will get backed up by the service. Try google or amazon photos to save your images and videos. Hook up a google calendar to sync off your remaining calendars, emails and notes. The rest should just be your other apps; either they have their own alternate backup mechanisms (many of the productivity apps let you copy to Dropbox), or you’ll just have to treat them as disposable.
