If I purchase an Apple Watch in the US will I have the ECG app outside of the country

There have been some reports from US users who purchased and setup the ECG functions before leaving home, then traveled out of USA and the ECG function kept working. However (a) that was early software versions and we have no idea what has changed in the latest updates, and (b) there is no guarantee the ECG function would survive a software update applied while out of country (probably not a real problem for short term travel but it could be a serious inconvenience for anyone working overseas for an extended deployment).

I get the sense you are thinking to buy in USA because you are trying to defeat the country lock on ECG. My advice is Don’t Do That because your watch will almost certainly not get warranty support out of USA, and you will be locked to a return visit to USA each time you want to update or reload the ECG functions.

That raises an interesting question not mentioned in any of the support docs I have seen - is the country lock linked to the watch which senses the ECG, or the iPhone which sets it up and displays it, or both?

The safe answer would be that both devices should have been purchased in the (same) country of where they will have primary use, but we don’t really know for sure. Anyone who takes a risk with watch and phone from two different countries might find they have a combination which is rejected in both countries.

Apple is required to comply with the laws of each country where it does business. The law in most developed countries restricts supply of unapproved medical and diagnostic devices, so Apple can only allow access for ECG in countries which have specifically granted permission. If they allow unrestricted access in other countries there is a real risk the authorities will either prosecute or simply shut down Apple’s business.
