Clipping files in iTunes
I have imported a song file into my iTunes library. I want to clip out much of it. Can that be done in iTunes? How do I do it? Can iTunes show a graph for the sounds?

If you want fine control, and in particular to see the waveform, then Audacity is your best solution.
If you want to just trim the start or end of a track when playing in iTunes you can select it, use Song Info (cmd+i), select the Options tab, (where it says Details, Artwork, Lyrics, Options, Sorting, File) and adjust the start and end times. Those changes won't be copied to a device however. To commit them you can create a new copy of the song with the adjusted times, which is the same technique you would use when making ringtones (even if you don't follow all the steps to make a ringtone).

No, you can't do that in iTunes. You should be able to do it in Garageband. Or, in a third-party app such as Audacity.
It depends what you mean by "clip out." if you want just a certain section to remain, use the Start Time and Stop Time on the Options tab.

Oh, gosh. I'd forgotten all about that!
When you're looking at the waveform you can zoom in so that you can set a start or finish point on the exact beat or syllable that you want.

Thanks. That's the kind of answer that is helpful. I'm having trouble with Garageband and Audacity, but the responsibility is solely mine. I just have to learn how to use both of them. It take time an perseverance. At least for me.
What "options tab"? I thought I understood you, but when I clicked on the Options key as the music was playing, there was no effect; then, I noticed your "TAB." What tab? Where? Where's "Start Time and Stop Time on the Options tab"?
My God, you provided the answer eight days ago, but either it just didn't register in my brain, or I never saw it. In fact, I just came here to post the solution I found here: https://www.iskysoft.com/video-editing/trim-mp3-in-itunes.html. I like these sessions to have definite endings, not just peter out inconclusively, so I always try to end with a positive note if I can. No one should have to plow through all the discussion only to find no solution at the end. Tell you what, even though I found the solution on my own, you provided it before I found it, so I'm going to say that you solved the question.
But iTunes cannot convert webarchive files into MP3, you say. I know. That's what everyone says, and I'm not qualified to enter the discussion. All I know is that I started with a webarchive file, and I succeeded in clipping out three quarters, renaming the remaining part, and posting it into my iTunes Playlist. Unfortunately, I still am unable to do the thing that got me started: export the shortened clip. The clip in my Playlist lasts the three or four minutes I want, but when I export it to, say, Mail, the original fourteen minute file comes out at the other end. Don't ask me why. I don't know. I'm only telling you what happens. Maybe, another day, I'll figure out how to export only what I hear in my Playlist .
I've always known you were right, but I've just never been able to use Audacity...until today. However, with perseverance, even the most hopeless dullard can succeed...sometimes. Anyway, today was the day. I won't shame myself by telling you how long it took me to upload my webarchive file into Audacity and to clip the file to the required length, BUT I FINALLY DID IT. True, I had to give up trying to make it the exact length required, but I finally settled on the well-known words,
"good enough." Try as I might, it was always a choice between leaving out some of the material or including a little too much, so I finally settled on including a few words that I didn't need or want. There must be a way to stop and start on a syllable or .note, but I didn't find it, and I'm not going to worry about it this time. Maybe next time I'll figure out how to do it. Thanks for your assistance. Oh, yes, I also managed to export the EDITED file to a group to which I belong.
That's news to me. I'll have to look for it. Thanks.
But I thought that I've been told that I cannot do what I want with iTune?
Thanks. I tried that, but I guess I didn't try enough. Next time.
