Contacts and messages not syncing

My girlfriend gave me her iPad mini 2 she doesn’t use. I signed out of all of her stuff and now I’m signed in under my iCloud account and my contacts won’t sync to the iPad. I signed out and back in multiple times on both iPhone 7+ and the iPad mini 2, checked if the device shows up on iCloud.com, and checked the tabs on in iCloud settings for messages and contacts on both devices. What else am I missing? Will all of my messages from my iPhone not sync to the iPad and only new messages show up? If that’s the case I’m fine with that but all of the texts in iMessages show up only as their phone number and not the contacts.

I understand you're not seeing your contacts on the iPad mini 2 that your girlfriend gave you. I'd be happy to provide information on what may be happening.

Check to see if the contacts on your iPhone 7 Plus were actually being stored on iCloud. You can do this by going to iCloud.com and selecting contacts.

If they're not being stored in iCloud, they're likely being stored in one of your email accounts: Get help using iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders

Once you figure out where the contacts are being stored, you can import them into iCloud: iCloud: Import a contact into iCloud Contacts

Thank you very much for your help. I figured out that it was indeed in my gmail account and not in my icloud account and I managed to import them from gmail. Does importing them as a vcard also import the contact photo as well?
