A1238 iPod Classic - Is it a throw away?

Hi, I was informed by a tech guy that because my Mac Book Pro and iTunes does not recognise my iPod Classic, I should throw it away and get a new one priced at around $500 AUS. Is this right or can i get the right driver or work out someway for the device to be recognised by the computer or iTunes?

Your iPod classic should continue to work with the latest version of iTunes. See If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support.
