Can’t send a sound text message

I have been trying to send a sound bite text message. I press the microphone icon, hold it, and get the wavy recording line, I speak what I want to send, and it disappears without recording! It tries to convert the sound I’m making to English, but I just want to send a sound.

iPhone XR, iOS 12

You are pressing the wrong microphone icon. You must have used the one in the bottom right corner of the screen, which is the dictation icon, which will turn voice to text. If you wish to send a voice message, you need to use the one that appears to the right of where you would normally type text. Press and hold, it will record you voice. After that, you can press the send arrow on the right, or if you wish to cancel that one and record again, press the X on the left side.

Remember, you can only do this voice message as an iMessage, to users with iOS devices, and they cannot be sent to non-iOS users.
