All but one desktop folder disappeared, and I can't find the folders or documents on my computer. They include all my PhD work, so I need clear, concise, step-by-step instructions on how to retrieve my folders and documents. THANKS!

Have you looked in Trash, or done a Spotlight (magnifying glass top right of menubar) or Finder search (command f)?
