Sim Card Error

Iphone 5 that is unlock and was being used with a different carrier and now receiving error message saying to contact carrier. Which I did, and they said (Sprint) iPhone with them says is unlock and apple is doing this for people to use newer version of iPhones. Please advise.

This phone was purchased about 4 years ago from sprint. The phone was unlocked by Sprint and currently they are indicating it is. I was using the phone abroad and worked fine. I'm back in the states and I'm trying to use a different carrier and is not working. It says The Sim card that you currently have installed in this IPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iphone. Please see picture below,
