Many similar questions here have suggested using a powered hub and that has worked to those who tried it. But my iPad Pro that’s only months old should need a powered hub when a 4 year old iPad Air works great direct to the adapter? My old iPad Pro with lightning also worked!

I understand that. But the manufacturer should know how their products perform on different devices and while we can provide guesses, they would be the best source for you to reach out to.
You do realize we are just volunteer users helping other users on this forum, right?
But if you want my guess, I'd try a powered hub.
Since this is not an Apple product, I would recommend you reach out to the microphone manufacturer and see what they suggest.
I've tried two different microphones and they both do the same thing on the iPad Pro. They work fine on the other iPad. So it’s not the microphone. It’s the iPad, and there are other threads about the same problem. In both cases I’m using a genuine Apple adapter (lightning and usb-c)
