iPhone won't update to 12.3.1 via iTunes

My phone (6s) has a pending update to 12.3.1, but there isn't enough storage available to install. I've read that using iTunes can get around this, but when attempting to update via iTunes, i still get an error message indicating more free space is needed. I thought deleting the downloaded update would free up space, but I don't see it in the storage list. Couple questions:

  1. How do I delete the downloaded update
  2. How can I complete the update via iTunes

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Get help with over-the-air iOS updates

You might be unable to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch wirelessly — or over the air — for one of these reasons.

  • Not enough available storage space on your device
  • Downloading the update takes a long time
  • Unable to reach the update server
  • The update doesn't complete

Go to Settings > General > [Device name] Storage. Find the iOS update in the list of apps. Tap the iOS update, then tap DeleteUpdate. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest iOS update.

I think you need to delete some more content or you will have more problems down the road than just updating the phone. On your phone, did you look in Settings>General>iPhone Storage to see if there is some content that you can delete. You might want to consider freeing up space by importing photos to your computer and delete them off the phone.

The downloaded iOS software would be where you see the list of apps that I described above. Settings>General>iPhone Storage. You may have to swipe to look for it. However, you will only see the downloaded software in the settings, if it downloaded over the air, not from iTunes.

I have removed content many times, and I don't really keep a ton of content on my phone. In fact, I'm wondering why I'm always running out space, because when I look at the storage graph in iPhone Storage, over half of it is the 'Other' category. Apps, Messages, and Photos only takes up less than half of the 16GB. There doesn't seem to be a way to shrink the 'Other' size.
