Replace vs. Merge ...

I am confused about the difference between “replace” and “merge”

in a MacBook Pro. I know that “replace,” completely over-writes the old file or

folder with the new data. However, how is “merge” different? Does “merge” only replace

the specific data that was “changed” in a file or folder, and replaced with

your revisions? Or, does “merge” simply create a second copy of the file or

folder; kind-of performing the same function as Time Machine.

Merging puts all the files from both folders in a single folder.

From Mac Help "The Merge option appears only if one of the folders contains items that are not in the other folder. If the folders contain different versions of identically named files, the only options are Stop or Replace."
