Can an edited photo (iPhone Xs) be reversed to the original photo file? When I worked on my old i5, the edits were not permanent. But now with the my new phone & maybe with new HEIC format, I find that an edited photo appears to be forever changed. How can I get the original photo back? I did not intend to destroy the original version, but it appears I did.

While the edited photo is still in your Photos Library on the iPhone, open it in Edit mode, then tap the Revert button.

I am familiar with this edit & revert function. I have already tried these steps and there is no "Revert" option on the photo. It appears that the original photo has been permanently altered. I do not know how this happened. It would be helpful to know how it could have happen so that I can avoid this in the future. I do recall that this was a picture taken at a wedding. I was showing my mother how you can crop the photo (and revert to original). I sent her the cropped version. Now that I want to see the original photo file, all I can see is the edited photo with no option to revert to original. How did this happen? (I might have saved the edited version as a photo, but I did not expect to lose the original in the process.)
