Safely Cleaning Airpods

This may be TMI, but my AirPods have earwax REALLY stuck in the mesh and I can barley hear my music unless I turn it all the way up. How do I do a “deep clean” on my AirPods? I tried using a soft bristle tooth brush but it’s not doing the job.
