Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop Reminder's syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the sync to complete.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, I tried everything simple last night, including turning off syncing for Reminders, and signing out of iCloud (several times each). Then this morning when I saw that Reminders still wasn't syncing, I tried deleting Calendar and Reminders's preferences; restarting the Mac, and signing out one more time from iCloud. Wonder of wonders, it all worked afterward!
