Photos for Mac won't import photos, sits there and does nothing

Hi,

I have MacOS Sierra installed on my 2011 MBP, and I'm trying to use the "Photos" app to import photos and videos from my iPhone 7. When I plug in the phone, it appears in the sidebar. Clicking that, I can see the photos on the device, and I can tell it to import the photos. When I do that, it switches me to a screen that says "Last Import," and then nothing happens. If I click on the phone icon, it doesn't show any import progress.

I've googled this for solutions, and nothing I try is helping.

  • My Mac is as up to date as I can get it (as far as I can tell), and my iPhone is also up to date.
  • I tried repairing permissions on the disk, and I tried rebuilding the photo library in Photos.
  • I have no problem syncing the phone with iTunes.

I keep seeing this problem pop up, with solutions that don't seem to work for me. Can anyone offer any other ideas?

Thanks

iPhone 7

I tried using Image Capture and got error -9937. Googling that, I found suggestion to not use a USB hub. But I'm NOT using a USB hub. Then I saw another suggestion to switch the phone to import original items rather than compatible ones. Image Capture will import items now, but Photos complains about a video being in an incompatible format (it has a .MOV extension).

So, still stuck for now.
