Importing photos to mac

I am trying to import photos from my iPhone to my Mac. I have never had problems doing this before. However, this evening every time I connect my phone ‘Photos’ continually switches screens between importing photos and welcome to photos. Then it stopped and imported my photos and then they disappeared and I got the flashing between screens again. Anyone had a similar issue and know how to stop this? Many thanks.
