I got a usb-c to lightening cable. I may have wrong cable. One end fits in my iPhone 7 and the other will not fit into charger adapter plugs I have. I want it to charge my phone. Also does not connect to my iMac?? Should send it a back or get an adapter?

It sounds like you need the USB 2.0 to Lightning cable rather than the USB-C to Lightning cable. USB-C is newer and not found on older devices.
