Photo time and date

I just returned from a 3 week vacation in Europe with about 2000 photos downloaded to my iPad and subsequently iPhone and icloud. The dates and times whilst in Europe corresponded with the actual time that the photos were taken. Now that I am back in Western Canada, I have my iPad synced for our time zone. I just started sorting my photos and all of them have been assigned a new time to correspond to our time zone, therefore most of my photos show times in the middle of the night or in some cases the previous day. Am I missing something here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

This is indeed how the iPad and iPhone are handling the dates and times for the photos on iOS 12. The times are always shown converted to the timezone of the lock on the device. This has the advantage, that you exactly know the timezone for the time that is shown, because Photos will never show the the timezone for a date and time, and the timezone for the date and the time of a photo is not necessarily the local timezone where the photo has been taken. The camera may have been set to a different timezone.

I was hoping that this post would generate more suggestions. I see what you are saying, but that really doesn’t work. For example, I travel to Europe, change my camera time and my iPad time to the current time zone (+8hrs)I take photos at just after midnight on the 5th of the month, I then return home, change my iPad to local time, and all of a sudden my photo times change to 8 hours earlier, so now they show up on The 4th of the month. It’s OK now, but in a few years when I go back through my photos, they will have the wrong date and the actual date will be long forgotten. I can’t believe that Apple really wants it to be this way, it’s not accurate. Is there a way around this?
