i was wondering if the Apple Magic Trackpad connects to the Apple TV as a secondary remote?

Sorry, no. Out of the Magic Mouse/Trackpad/Keyboard family, only the keyboard connects.
Unrelated and likely something you know already (but is cool nonetheless), AirPods and any wireless Beats product will connect! And then there’s always any iOS/iPadOS device that will work as a separate controller. 😃
