Hello,
Lets try this, power your iMac down completely. Press the power button and as soon as your hear the “bong” press and hold ⌘ (Command) + V. This will startup your Mac in Verbose mode. The last line of the startup log will indicate what its having issues with when your Mac is starting up. Please share it on here.

I believe OS is 12.1
Had been running a bit slower, and could not update to Mojave. Otherwise, worked just fine. When I turned on yesterday, it is just stuck on the boot screen. I have done a hard shut down several times, unplugged and then restarted to no avail. I cannot get to the login screen and have not been able to do more than the verbose screen. Last line is: disk0s2: I/O error.
Boot up off your installer DVD and run Disk Utility on your hard drive.
Also, if you can, boot off an external hard drive with a suitable macOS on it and see what repairs you can do with Disk Utility or other disk repair/rescue utilities.
Hello,
It sounds like your hard disk has crashed. You will need to contact AppleCare for assistance in a replacement hard disk.
Start with better explaining because we can not see your Mac.
