Unusual background data usage - which app?

One of our phones recently used an unusual amount of data (0.75 Gb) at 3:30AM when neither of us was awake. How can I determine which app caused that usage?

My carrier provided a minute-by-minute report of data usage over a 5 day period; also we never use that much data even in entire day. This the first time this has happened. The carrier suspects, as do I, that an app was doing something in the background but couldn't identify which app (that is what I'm trying to determine...). Unfortunately the phone's use statistics on app useage haven't been reset for years (why doesn't it keep track daily and/or per billing period?) so that function is not informative.

Everyone's billing cycle is different, so being able to have the phone reset each time would be difficult. You can set yourself a recurring reminder to reset you statistics monthly, or at any other interval you wish and you can reset it manually. If you have background turned off, then nothing should be using data when the phone is locked. I suggest you make sure that is off, reset your statistics and keep track of things for a week to see what happens. Otherwise, it is difficult to say what it was.

By default, the phone automatically tracks and reports battery usage by each app over both the last 24 hours and the last 7 days. I can't imagine it is any more difficult to track the same for cellular network usage. In fact I would be amazed if this doesn't happen also by default; that info is too valuable to Apple and developers to be neglected. I merely want to know how to access the info on app use at a specific time and date.

The battery usage app is tracking usage constantly. The phone does not collect or report your data usage. Why would that be valuable to Apple, since they are not the ones charging you for usage, your carrier is. Your carrier is collecting usage data, it is just that they bill it in blocks instead of each splinter of time that you use data. I suppose if you wish to hound someone about your data usage, you could talk to them, however I'm not so sure they can tell exactly what is doing it, since it is just a data block used by your phone, and the carrier just identifies the device, not the actual data user.
