why do texts go to an email when i send them to a phone number

When I send a text to a specific iphone number the text doesn't go to that iPhone it goes to that same persons computer to an email address. This only happens when I send from my iphone or my ipad not my MacBook. I've looked at the setting on the iphone/ipad and they seem to be the same as on my MBP. What am I missing?

Thanks for the help. I checked the contact on all 3 of my devices (iPhone, iPad, and MBP) since they are all on my cloud account so they all have only the phone number listed for the person in question. I have a 2nd contact for that person that only has their email and not their phone.


iPhone - sends only to email even if I send on to the phone number

MBP - sends to phone when I use the phone, and to the email when I send to email

iPad - sends only to email even if I send on to the phone number


I can reply to their phone but I cannot start a message to their phone - which means I cannot contact them via text if we are both away from our computers...

So, looking at the iPhone and iPad settings. When you take a look at this contact, are they using iMessage? If they are using iMessage and you look at your iMessage settings, when you look at your Send & Receive information, are you sending your iMessage from your phone number? If they are not using iMessage, do you have an SMS/MMS account provisioned on your phone? If this person is using iMessage, what does it show in their Send & Receive, their phone number or their Apple ID email? If they are not using iMessage, do they have an SMS/MMS provisioned for their account?


Any further troubleshooting may result in you having to delete any and all text threads with this contact to be able to clear everything in your device associated with the person to try and correct the issue.

Check your settings for iMessage on your iOS devices, and check to see what address you have for the contact in question. It may be that you are attempting to send to their Apple ID. You can also ask them to check their iMessage settings to ensure that it is activated correctly, and see what address it says they may be contacted at. It may be they have it set for their Apple ID rather than their phone number.
